Kongeriket Baron er det mektigste i hele kongeriket, men Cecil har begynt å tvile på kongens dømmekraft. Dette straffes han hardt for og blir fradratt all rang og rettigheter. Deretter sendes han sammen med sin beste venn, Kain, til landsbygden Mysidia for å levere en ring. Det er med skrekk de finner ut at den forløser en hel skog med monstre på landsbyen og meier ned all motstand. Den eneste overlevende, Rydia, maner frem en titan som skaper et så stort jordskjelv at de to soldatene kommer fra hverandre. Etter å ha redde Rydia fra banditter, setter Cecil ut på et oppdrag som skal vise seg å være mye større enn han noen gang kunne ha trodd.
