Released by Sega in Japan in 1988, North America in 1989, and the PAL region in 1990. Mega Drive was the name used in Japan and Europe, while it was sold under the name Sega Genesis in North America, as Sega was unable to secure legal rights to the Mega Drive name in that region. The Mega Drive was Sega's fifth home console and the successor to the Sega Master System.

In the year 2025, a war breaks out between humans and a hostile alien race, and 16-year-old Lucia and the rest of the starfighter pilots in the Earth Federation must join the battle. When Lucia's father, Ken, is kidnapped by the aliens, Lucia decides to take action and hijacks a brand-new prototype starfighter, the Gley Lancer, in order to fry to save her father. In this side-scrolling shooter, step into the cockpit of the Gley Lancer as Lucia, rescue your father, and destroy the evil aliens that are bent on destroying the human race!
Gley Lancer is somewhat unique in several ways. The player can select what shooting patterns including orbiting, auto-targets and more, with up to two wingmen that shoots whatever upgrade is selected. Originally exclusively released in Japan only, but later re-released on several other platforms, including the Wii Virtual Console.
