The story of Der Langrisser follows Erwin, a young warrior who is given a powerful sword called Langrisser by a mysterious woman named Jessica. Erwin is tasked with leading his army against the invading forces of the Rayguard Empire and their dark lord, Bozel. As Erwin travels the world, he must make choices that will determine the fate of his kingdom and the people he cares about. Ultimately, the player's choices will determine whether Erwin becomes a hero or a villain in the eyes of history.

Known for its complex gameplay mechanics, which include unit placement, terrain effects, and a rock-paper-scissors system for combat.
