Great news anyone! After over half a year of research on how to present information in even a better way than before, we've developed The DOS Spirit Version Six (or v6.0). There are quite the few changes that have been made, and we're proud to present them to you. Among the new features:
New, slick and lightweight design
The DOS Spirit Version Six features a brand new look, overhauled and revamped text presentation and a more user friendly interface to find the information you need. Also, the front page now features more interesting information right to your doorstep. Now that's just smoooooth.
Register your own account!
The DOS Spirit have now opened account registrations. Creating an account is of course a breezy process, but more importantly; it let's you take a greater part of TDS.
You can now add your own user reviews for titles we've reviewed.
Have a say about a game? Why not submit a user review for it!? This is a great way to have your 5 pennies worth, and it's also a nice way to take part in the community. You also earn experience points for each review accepted. The more you have, the better the chance you got for our random giveaways. This could be t-shirts, games or a tasty surprise - you'll never now.
Devoted and contributing users also have the chance of becoming admins where they can add new reviews themselves and join the original staff of The DOS Spirit for eternal retro glory - and cake.
Optimized for every browser - almost
We've gone great lengths in assuring that your browsing experience is as close to the one we intended no matter what browser you're using. The DOS Spirit Version Six has been properly tested in IE 6, IE 7, Firefox, Opera and Safari - without any hacks, and still keeping the site lightweight and W3C Validated.
Great presentation and overview
One of the big changes is how each review is laid out. We've gone further than most other sites in the extent of providing users links to where to buy the games (and support their original creators), add the review to sites like Kudos.no and Digg.com and of course submit your own review and/or rating of the games we review.
Search Engine Friendly
In order for everyone to see how great TDS v6 is, search engines need to pick up every detail of the site. Each page is setup with simplicity in mind, while not comprimising the idea of slickness and new thinking. Pages are laid out in a natural manner, much like you would find in a normal document - for your pleasure of course.
For those with no javascript - we salute you
A modern trend today is to jump on the technology-wagon the minute something cool-looking (yet badly tested) software gets popular. Some might even break your code, hamper useability or even worse; hide content for those who hasn't got scripts enabled in their browsers. This has been a major focal-point while developing the new pages. How can you offer neat functionality without comprimising those who can't view it? The result is a very sublime, lightweight and almost neutral use of any javascript on the site as a whole. The most "advanced" we use is the tooltip which has been tried and true from TDS Version 5, eating just the shy mark of 2Kb. And best of all, everything degrades nicely for those with no javascript. It won't hamper your browsing experience, and you still can enjoy everything.
Talking of lightweight, it is!
Lightweight is nothing unless you actually do something about it. That's why every pixel, every graphic used in the new design is a small as possible - usually less than 1Kb. Excluding the header, we're talking less than 3Kb in total for the layout. Everything else is through the power of CSS.
That's just a little on what we've been doing the past half a year, and there's more to come. So far the accounts are up for registering, so go ahead and secure one while they're hot and tasty. So far we're not requiring any confirmation by email, but that will most likely change as a safety measure. On another note, we're upgrading "My actitivities" under My Account, so this is not up and working yet. But, except from that; Have fun, enjoy the new look of site, and always remember The Good Old DOS Spirit.
From all of us, to all of you,
Have a nice weekend.
