The year is some time in the 21th century and Space Pirates have gotten a hold of samples of Metroid creatures - dangerous floating creatures that can siphon life energy from any organism and kill them. The pirates aim to replicate these creatures to create biological weapons. To battle this new threat, the Federation sends a one of the best bounty hunter out there, Samus Aran, to infiltrate the Pirate's base and destroy Mother Brain, the lifeform that protects the base.

Metroid, much like Castlevania, is touted for cohesively creating what's called the "Metroidvania" style of games. These signify large amount of player freedom in how they explore and progress, with a dynamic story and map to uncover.
